Daren Smith is the Chief Investment Officer of Public Equities at the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, where he is responsible for managing ADIC’s public equities portfolio. Prior to joining ADIC in 2021, Daren spent 13 years at the University of Toronto Asset Management Corporation, which at the time was the investment manager of the University of Toronto’s Pension, Endowment and short-term working capital assets. For the last 5 years at UTAM, Daren was the President & Chief Investment Officer and was responsible for all aspects of the business.
Prior to joining UTAM, Daren was a partner and senior member of the investment team at Keel Capital, which managed all of the assets for a Canadian pension plan. Daren is a qualified actuary and spent the early part of his career in various actuarial roles at Sun Life Financial and Maritime Life.
Daren holds a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science (B.Sc.) from the University of Western Ontario, a Master’s degree in Statistics (M.Sc.) from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree in Economics (M.A.) from McMaster University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). Daren holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), and the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designations.
